Discreet protection and safer outcomes for birds

Bird‑safe window films are designed for homeowners and architects who want to prevent bird collisions without compromising the look of their glazing. These films use subtle visual markers that birds recognise as a barrier.  The result is a glazing upgrade that protects birds, preserves your views.

Understanding Threat Factor – How Bird‑Safe Films Are Measured

Bird‑safe window films are rated using the Threat Factor (TF) system developed by the American Bird Conservancy. It’s a simple, reliable way to understand how effective a pattern is at preventing bird collisions.

  • Threat Factor runs from 0 to 100

  • Lower numbers mean better protection

  • A TF of 4 means only 4% of birds failed to avoid the treated glass in testing

  • A TF of 100 represents untreated glass and therefore the highest collision risk

Testing is carried out in controlled flight tunnels where birds choose between treated and untreated panes. The results are converted into a Threat Factor score, giving architects, homeowners, and planners a clear benchmark for choosing the right pattern.

Safer outcomes for birds and glazing that still looks like glass

Bird‑safe films are designed for people who want to protect wildlife without compromising the clean, open look of modern glass. These films use discreet visual markers that birds instantly recognise as a barrier, while remaining barely noticeable to the human eye. They help prevent collisions, reduce reflections, and keep your glazing looking exactly as intended.

Vertical Lines – A Softer, More Understated Bird‑Safe Solution

With a Threat Factor of 20, the vertical line pattern provides moderate protection in a very discreet form.

Horizontal Lines – Strong Protection With a Clean, Modern Look

The horizontal line pattern offers a crisp architectural aesthetic while delivering a Threat Factor of 10.

Dot Variation – Softer Protection With a More Subtle Finish

The dot pattern offers a gentle visual presence while still offering meaningful collision reduction Threat Factor of 15

Black Dots – Maximum Protection With a Bold, High‑Contrast Pattern

The black dot pattern delivers the strongest collision‑prevention performance. Its high‑contrast dot layout offers a Threat Factor of 4.

Why Bird‑Safe Films Work So Well

Bird‑safe films are built around a simple principle: birds need a visual signal that glass is solid. These patterns help you solve the key challenges:

Preventing collisions

Dots or lines interrupt reflections and give birds a clear cue to divert.

Preserving architectural clarity

Patterns are visible to birds but discreet to humans, keeping the glazing clean and modern.

Supporting wildlife without replacing glass

A retrofit solution that works on existing windows, balustrades, and extensions.

Meeting modern building expectations

Ideal for homes near nature, coastal routes, or green corridors where bird activity is common.

Bird‑safe films offer a thoughtful, design‑led way to protect wildlife while keeping your home bright, open, and visually refined.

Anti Bird-Strike Heritage

Developed in partnership with leading bird‑safety researchers, the range brings together subtle design, reliable performance, and a commitment to protecting wildlife without altering the character of your glazing.

Bird-strike window film is a transparent or lightly patterned film applied to glass to help birds see it as a solid surface. It uses visual marker, like dots or lines, birds recognize in flight, preventing them from accidentally flying into windows.

Birds often mistake clear or reflective glass for open sky or habitat. Anti-strike films break up those reflections with subtle patterns that birds can detect, triggering avoidance behaviour. The most effective patterns follow the “50mm x 100mm rule”: vertical lines no more than 100 mm apart or horizontal lines no more than 50 mm apart.

Threat Factor (TF) is a rating developed by the American Bird Conservancy to measure how effective a pattern is at preventing collisions:

  • TF 4 = very high protection (only 4% of birds failed to avoid the glass in testing)

  • TF 10–20 = moderate protection

  • TF 100 = untreated glass (highest risk)

Lower numbers mean better protection.

  • Black Dot – TF 4: high-contrast dots, strongest protection

  • Dot Variation – TF 15: more subtle dot layout, moderate protection

  • Horizontal Lines – TF 10: crisp linear pattern, strong protection

  • Vertical Lines – TF 20: softer appearance, lighter protection

These films are designed to be visible to birds but more discreet to humans.

Yes.

  • Windows

  • Patio doors

  • Balustrades

  • Conservatories

  • Roof glazing

They’re especially useful on large, reflective surfaces or glass near gardens and wooded areas.

The films are durable and weather-resistant but can be removed or replaced if needed. They’re applied with pressure-sensitive adhesive and typically last for several years depending on exposure.

t depends on your priorities:

  • Maximum protection → Black Dot (TF 4)

  • Subtle appearance → Dot Variation (TF 15) or Vertical Lines (TF 20)

  • Architectural clarity → Horizontal Lines (TF 10)
