Roof lantern and skylight film for orangeries

In short: on an orangery roof lantern or flat-roof skylight we usually fit 3M Prestige 50 Exterior on the outside: about 56% less solar heat gain on 3M’s double-glazing reference, with only a light tint. Film will not stick to self-cleaning glass, so there we fit 3M All Seasons 35 inside instead.

An orangery lantern sits on a flat roof, and that changes the answer. Unlike most conservatory roofs, there is usually safe access around it, so we can fit 3M Prestige Exterior on the outside, where it stops the heat before it enters the glass. 3M backs Prestige Exterior with warranties for sloping and horizontal glazing, which most exterior films do not have.

FilmVerdictWhy
3M Prestige 50 Exterior✓ Our pickAbout 15% more heat-gain reduction than 3M Prestige 70 Exterior (56% against 41% on 3M’s double-glazing reference), with a light tint.
3M Prestige 70 Exterior✓ RecommendedVirtually no change in appearance; keeps the most light.
3M Prestige 20 Exterior✓ RecommendedDarker, for the hottest rooms and the strongest glare control.
3M All Seasons 35, inside✓ Recommended on self-cleaning glassFilm will not stick to self-cleaning coatings, so it goes inside. About 54% less solar heat gain on 3M’s double-glazing reference.

Self-cleaning glass, such as Pilkington Activ, cannot take exterior film, so we check the glass before we quote. Every figure we quote is the improvement you can expect over the glass you have now. For typical film prices, see our conservatory window film cost guide.

3M Prestige 70 Exterior

  • Virtually undetectable on the glass

  • Often considered the sweet spot for orangery roof glazing

  • Ideal when both cooling and visual comfort are priorities

Extended 3M‑Backed Warranties for Pitched & Horizontal Glass

The 3M Prestige Exterior range is one of the only film families on the market that carries extended 3M‑backed warranties specifically for sloping and horizontal glazing. Most exterior films are only warranted on vertical or sloping glass greater than 15 degrees above the horizontal. Prestige is engineered, and certified, for the demanding conditions of overhead installations.

This means you’re investing in a longer‑lasting, more reliable solution than typical exterior films, with performance and durability supported directly by 3M.

When External Films Aren’t Suitable for roof glass

Many skylights and rooflights have self‑cleaning external coatings, which prevent exterior films from adhering properly. In these cases, an internal solution is required.

3M All Seasons Interior Film

  • Designed for internal application where external coatings are present

  • Lets through about 28% of the light on clear double glazing while cutting glare by about 65%

  • Provides reliable heat reduction and year‑round comfort

Comfort Without Compromise

Whether you’re cooling a sun‑drenched orangery or reducing glare from an overhead skylight, our glazing films deliver:

  • Noticeably cooler temperatures in summer

  • Reduced glare for more comfortable daytime living

  • Protection against UV fading

  • A clearer, more usable living space all year round

Which Roof Film is right for you Orangery or Skylight?

Before you decide

The number most companies quote is not the improvement you will get. Most window film figures are measured on a single pane of clear glass, and the headline often includes the heat the bare glass already turns away, so the film looks better than it is. Your conservatory or orangery almost certainly has modern double glazing that already does part of the job. Every figure we quote is the improvement you can expect over the glazing you have now.

Orangery and skylight film questions

Flat roofs change the answer

On a pitched conservatory roof we fit film inside, because working on the roof risks leaks and falls. An orangery lantern or flat-roof skylight is different: with safe access from the flat roof, an exterior film can go where it performs best. The two things we check first are access and whether the glass has a self-cleaning coating.

Access. A roof lantern or skylight sits on a flat roof, so there is usually a safe place to work around it. A pitched conservatory roof has none, and working on it risks leaks and falls, so there we fit film inside. On a lantern, an exterior film stops the heat before it enters the glass.

3M Prestige 50 Exterior for most lanterns: about 56% less solar heat gain on 3M’s double-glazing reference, with only a light tint. 3M Prestige 70 Exterior keeps the most light, and 3M Prestige 20 Exterior is darker, for the hottest rooms. 3M backs Prestige Exterior with warranties for sloping and horizontal glass.

Exterior film will not stick to self-cleaning coatings such as Pilkington Activ™, so on that glass we fit 3M All Seasons 35 inside instead. It cuts solar heat gain by about 54% on 3M’s double-glazing reference while keeping the room bright: see our Amersham sky lantern. We check the glass before we quote.

Prestige Exterior has a 10 year warranty on vertical glass and 7 years on sloped glass, but in practice it often lasts far longer. Many installations are still going strong after 14 years.

The film itself is rarely the weak point. Issues are usually caused by installation errors such as contamination under the film, edges cut too tight to the gaskets, or corners lifting over time. Installation quality is covered in why 3M All Seasons 35 succeeds where other internal films fail.

We fit 3M Prestige Exterior on the outside of side windows too, where it stops the heat before it reaches the glass. See conservatory side window film.

Yes. The films we fit block 99% or more of UV, one of the main things that drive fading, and the darker films also cut much of the sun’s light. That slows fading considerably, but results vary with the fabric, its colour and how much direct sun it gets, and no film stops fading completely. Read more in our conservatory window film review.

It depends mainly on the glass area, the access and whether the glass is self-cleaning. Typical conservatory and orangery film prices are in our conservatory film cost guide, and we quote from your photos.
