Optically Clear Security Window Films for Modern Homes

Modern extensions, sliding doors, and bi‑folds bring in beautiful daylight and open up your living space. The hardware is strong, the locks are advanced, and the frames are engineered for security. But one part of the system remains vulnerable. That is the glass itself.

3M Security Window Films strengthen this weak point while keeping your glazing looking exactly the same. They are optically clear, so you keep your views, your daylight, and your clean architectural lines, with far greater resistance to forced entry.

Daylight S140 – Puncture‑Resistant

A thick laminated film that stops an intruder from making a quick hole to reach through.

  • Strong puncture resistance

  • Keeps broken glass held together

  • Slows opportunistic attacks

  • Completely clear

3M Ultra S800 – Tear‑Resistant

A premium multi‑layer film engineered to resist ripping, pulling, and repeated impact.

  • Micro‑layered construction

  • Extremely high tear strength

  • Designed for serious forced‑entry resistance

  • Optically clear

Both films strengthen your glazing without changing how your home looks.  Just invisible security where it matters.

Correct Installation Matters and It Depends on the Glass Type

Security film performance is only as good as the installation method. And the installation method depends entirely on the type of glass.

Toughened Glass (Tempered Glass)

Film must go behind the beading

Toughened glass breaks into cubes. If the film were applied only to the surface, the entire filmed pane could be pushed out of the frame as one piece, giving easy access.

To prevent this:

  • The glazing is removed from the frame

  • The film is applied edge‑to‑edge

  • The glass is refitted behind the beading or gasket

This traps the filmed glass inside the frame, so even when shattered, it cannot simply fall out. The intruder must now fight the film, the frame, and the beading.  A slow, noisy process that attracts attention.

This is why toughened‑glass installations take longer and cost more, but it’s also why they work.

Annealed, Float, or Laminated Glass

Film can be installed to the frame or gasket

These glass types do not break into cubes. They crack, and remain largely inside the frames. This means the filmed glass does not fall out as a single piece, so the film can be installed directly to the glass

This method still provides excellent forced‑entry resistance without needing to remove the glazing.

The Outcome: Invisible Strength

With 3M Security Window Films:

  • Your glazing stays clear

  • Your home stays bright

  • Your doors and windows look unchanged

  • But forced entry becomes dramatically harder

It’s discreet, intelligent protection for modern living and a powerful upgrade to any modern extension or glazed space.

3M Security Films Heritage

3M has been at the forefront of window‑film security for decades, pioneering the very technologies that shaped the modern industry. Their early breakthroughs in adhesive science and polyester laminates led to the first generation of safety films, and they continued to push the field forward with micro‑layered constructions like Ultra S800.  A design that dramatically increases tear resistance without adding bulk. From blast‑mitigation research to forced‑entry testing, 3M’s heritage is built on continuous innovation, rigorous engineering, and a commitment to protecting people and property with solutions that remain discreet, durable, and architecturally invisible.

They are optically clear films applied to your existing glazing to make it far harder to break through. They don’t change how your home looks.  You keep your daylight, your views, and your clean architectural lines, but the glass becomes dramatically more resistant to forced entry.

Daylight S140

  • Thick, laminated construction

  • Excellent puncture resistance

  • Designed to stop an intruder making a quick hole to reach through

  • Keeps broken glass held together

Ultra S800

  • Premium micro‑layered construction

  • Extremely high tear strength

  • Designed to resist ripping, pulling, and repeated impact

Both films are invisible once installed.  The difference is in how they behave under attack.

No. Both S140 and Ultra S800 are optically clear, so your glazing looks exactly the same. No tint, no mirror effect, no loss of daylight.

They strengthen the weakest part of modern glazing systems: the glass.
When struck, the film holds the broken glass together, forcing an intruder to fight the film, the frame, and the beading instead of simply stepping through a broken pane.
This slows the attack, increases noise, and buys you crucial time.

Yes — and this is critical for performance.

Toughened (Tempered) Glass

  • Must be filmed behind the beading

  • The glazing is removed, filmed edge‑to‑edge, and refitted

  • Prevents the entire pane from being pushed out as one piece

  • Slower and more labour‑intensive, but essential for proper security

Annealed, Float, or Laminated Glass

  • Film can be applied directly to the glass

  • No need to remove the glazing

  • Still provides excellent forced‑entry resistance

Because the glass has to be removed from the frame, filmed, and refitted. This ensures the filmed pane is trapped inside the frame so it cannot simply fall out when shattered. It’s more work, but it’s also what makes the system effective.

Both work well in reality.

However doors are often tempered (toughened) glass so the film would need to be restrained behind the beading framework.

Yes. These films are designed specifically for retrofit use on modern glazing, including sliding doors, bi‑folds, and large fixed panes.

The warranty is 10 years but they should last much longer.  Eventually the adhesive breaks down due to UV degradation

No.

3M S140 and 3M Ultra S800 are not bulletproof. They are designed to hold shattered glass together and slow forced entry, not to stop ballistic penetration.
